Competence in another language is an excellent skill to have and at Hornsea School and Language College all students are given the opportunity to study at least one Modern Foreign Language to GCSE standard. The Languages Department is committed to making this a practical and accessible opportunity for all students.

The main languages presently studied to GCSE are French and Spanish but as a Language College we have been able to offer other languages such as Italian, German and Japanese.

The department is well-equipped with modern technology in each class-room and has a purpose-built ICT suite where all GCSE students are able to learn on-line and develop their individual work. This has greatly helped to make the subject relevant to today’s world and to make contact overseas.

In July 2008 the school achieved International School status, which was re-awarded in 2011. This is a prestigious award which recognises the significant international work done by a number of curriculum areas in the school. The Languages’ department is fully committed to increasing the practical relevance of languages across the curriculum and has successfully worked with a broad range of subject areas on joint projects. Links have also been made with a number of different schools in the region as well as with Hull University.

As part of our commitment to the practical approach we run a number of foreign trips and activities. These include a French exchange, Work Shadowing in France, a Year 7 trip to Boulogne, a Spanish trip to Barcelona and a Japanese exchange which we run in collaboration with Beverley High School.

This is an exciting time for language-learning and we are proud that our students acquire an important skill for the workplace and their future lives.
